I've installed the GOG version of Mafia (1.3) on my laptop so I can mod cross-platform, and I got curious as to what specific changes were actually made with each of these patches. Over the years I've seen lots of general information about sound support, graphics support, making the race mission harder (1.1), etc, but I haven't been able to see which specific textures, sounds, and other bits were added/modified with each update.
Does anyone know any of these specifics? It would just be interesting to find out, really. _________________

Us simple forum folk don't know that kind of detail
All I can supply is useless tips like check the patch files. Also, there seems to be something in there regarding copy protection, which might be because changing files required it to be updated. Thoroughly useless paragraph, this.
Actual data is of course in a8.dta, but other than specific files like BMPs, logic behind that data is so far beyond the layman, Vavra knows what it all means.
Also I happen to like this topic
I noted the patch includes a new version of setup.exe, so you can compare those. As I recall the surround sound or dolby was removed or something due to problems. I always hated that stuff anyway, so...I paid little attention to it. |

I noticed in V1.0 there are no dogs in the car yard in the last mission (even though Lucas warns about them)

Hmm.. interesting. There seem to be some changes in language distributions. I own the first release of Mafia in my country CZ 1.0 ver. And in the last mission for Lucas, there are dogs in China Town car bazaar.

I was being a dummy, they actually can disappear in all versions if Yellow Pete is killed.
The biggest change imo is in v1.0 the main characters had properly animated eyeballs, it's a real shame the patch swapped them out because they added a huge layer of expression and meaning to many scenes, especially in the intermezzo bits they dart up and down a lot.
some other changes are scratches on cars were removed and many cheats were added (oddly you can still type some of them in v1.0 and the screen flashes but nothing happens)
I also recall a claim that collisions for NPC's getting in/out of cars was changed in some way, I was playing v1.0 recently and crashed into an invincible pedestrian like a brick wall who was boarding a tram, but then in the same game I ran into someone exiting their car and clipped straight through them like they didn't exist
Also the Fairplay race mission is changed in a few ways, in v1.0 there is a shortcut to win easily, the patch blocked that path but added an easy mode instead |

Brick walls is 1.0 behavior, ghosts is 1.1 behavior. There might be a timing element to it though.
In 1.1 car doors are transparent and drivers are until a moment when they gain solidity, you run them over while driving through them. The rest of the car is still a brick wall. In 1.0 the whole thing including the driver is a brick wall, which was problematic because cars could suddenly park (or there would be that timing element again) and as soon as they did the brick wall element came forth. Which obviously makes a mockery of the physics, developers seemingly spaced out on what should happen when a parking car is hit since nothing does, besides you becoming a meat pancake of course. |
