It seems like its just a graphical upgrade. I didn't see anywhere it terms of newly added content or even restored cut content from the original.

Thoughts and opinions?

I have to agree, the so called Def Ed is not much different in graphics
than the classic version of Mafia II. There is no option to turn on PhysX
and unlike the original there is no *car horn.

Also what happened to Jimmy's Vendetta and Joe's Adventures?

OK! The DLCs are there in Additional Content plus an extra one
Jimmy's Betrayal. Embarassed

*I found it, apparently it is the same button you set for
action in keyboard mapping for action.

Well, we weren't really gonna get much for free.
They seem to have just brought all the games up-to-date across the board.

2 and 3 seem to be just promos for the new Mafia 1 which definitely won't be free Smile.

Though Mafia 1 remake will eventually be followed by Mafia 4 ,won't it ?.

It's all good ,i enjoyed all the Mafia games ,pretty much ,even though M3 wasn't quite what i hoped for .

Considering I already owned Mafia 2, I obviously downloaded the Definitive Edition and tested it out.

Amazingly there seems to be absolutely no performance loss from having more detail, in fact it might just run a bit smoother for me. For the most part it also looks better to me, especially in night scenes the lighting seems more realistic. That being said, I kind of miss the toned-down look of the original in daytime scenes. I still wonder if there's really nearly 30gb worth of higher res textures in there, but hey - storage is cheap these days. Thinking

However, at least a few things seem to be broken: Vito's head is sticking through the hat while wearing a suit, something I don't recall happening in the original. Also the trash and clutter on the streets seems to have a weird flickering effect going on. One funny thing is that the police seems to completely ignore my speeding. They do hand out tickets if I run into things, but now matter how fast I blast through the streets, they just don't care. Sarcastic

OK! I have been playing the remastered Mafia II for
a while now and I have noticed a number of things

1: In the original release, if you beat up any gangsters
that are around Little Italy you could rob them or loot
their cash and weapon; in the remaster you can no
longer do this.

2: Bumper has already stated these i.e. if Vito buys
a casual suit with hat you can see part of his forehead
not with the raincoat and hat. And yeah the some debris
mostly old newspapers have weird glitching.

3: The smoke or steam coming from vents is very
juddery and sometimes in night missions shows
flickering of flashing light patches

4: When driving through the tunnel at night towards
Riverside the tunnel lights are too harsh tbth.

5: After you sell the Hotrod to Derek after The Wild Ones
the platform to sell cars was available - now in the remaster
it is only available as part of getting Eddie Scarpo's money
back' after this it is no longer there.

Oh and point 6: Cutscenes are cutting short and not
playing to their full content. Yes I know there is the
option to continue or skip but this is happening if
you don't press Esc to pause.

When I played through it, I noticed some things after some digging

- The newspaper guy who shouts "EXTRA EXTRA, Read all about it" is much less frequent. I haven't seen or heard him at all yet.

- The soldier that tells Vito to take the shot at the beginning of Chapter 1 says it with less urgency and is much more quiet

- Two additional cut locations were found in the Definitive Edition that haven't been found before (Courtesy of Greavesy and the Mafia 2 toolkit team): An unused gang hideout whose purpose is unknown and a shooting range connected to Harry's gun store.

- (I THINK unless its the mandela effect hitting me) Some playboy magazines changed locations. I remember going to a mag location from the original version in one of the early chapters in the Definitive Edition, but the mag was not there. Shortly after I found one in a new location that didn't have a mag present in the original version.

- The devs behind the Definitive Edition removed all nudity. When one of Joe's girls is taking a bath at his apartment, examining the model shows she has cloths underneath. The original version on the other hand had a detailed nude model.

Another thing which I forgot while playing Def Ed
is that having installed Mafia II (Classic) the hotdog
vendors say a lot and to the player, in Def Ed they
say nothing. No doubt I will discover more about
differences between the two versions of Mafia II.

Is it still a functional game? does look noticeably better/different?

Tossing up whether to play through it or not before August...

It looks good texture-wise and does fix some infamous issues like the black polygon breaking bug from the original. Performance is better to some degree, but other than that, its a bigger hassle setting up given that the cloth physics are disabled by default and some details from the original are gone.

I would honestly stick to the original game

I know I am still disappointed with removed speech
from vendors and yeah that flickering steam from
drain covers; BUT and that's a big BUT - They release
a patch on 18th June to fix so called issues. However
even with stuff that seems to have been removed; the
game is worse now:

PhysX doesn't work even with option to turn it on
Performance is worse even with the game maxed
out 4K it ran smooth before the patch - now since
the update/patch I am getting terrible lag.
Tbth I wish they had improved the original i.e.
Mafia II (Classic).

Edit: I was playing through the game and noticed
that if I stop either on foot or in a car the snow stops
as well... sheesh! What?

O...K! I have found a few tweaks for Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

From Gameranx

Gameranx wrote:
How To Fix Bad Performance

Some computers and GPUs are getting much worse performance than they should in Mafia 2 DE. There’s a strange fix that seems to actually work — give it a try.

While in-game, press Alt+Enter twice.

Alt+Enter switches between windowed and full screen. Pressing it twice resets — many poorly optimized games experience weird issues in windowed mode. Pressing Alt+Enter twice seems to put Mafia 2 in full screen mode, not the default windowed borderless mode.

How To Fix Broken Physics | PhysX Not Working

To enable PhysX with Nvidia for Mafia 2: Definitive Edition, you’ll need to tweak the in-game settings. PhysX is only supported by Nvidia graphics cards.

In-game, go to Options -> Video
Set Global Settings: High
Don’t set Global Settings to Custom.
Go Back and agree to restart to confirm settings.

Don’t test PhysX in Benchmark! For whatever reason, that seems to break your PhysX settings. Just start the game like normal.

How To Skip Intro Videos

To remove opening intros whenever you start your game, just rename / delete two files in your Mafia 2 installation folder on Steam.

Go to the Mafia 2 Installation folder located here:
steamapps\common\Mafia II Definitive Edition\pc\sds\video
Delete d3t.bik and Logos.bik

How To Fix Flickering Smoke Effects

If your smoke effects are flickering wildly and changing color, there’s a way to fix with the Nvidia Control Panel.

Open the Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings.
Select Mafia 2 DE in the drop-down menu
Scroll down and set Vertical Sync: Fast

Under Vertical Sync, you can choose Fast / Adaptive, but Fast seems to work better. Try both if you’re still experiencing problems.

Another tweak I found for Apex Cloth effects is to
go to the folder Edit/Apex and delete the Cloth folder.
For some reason the Apex cloth works in the DLCs
but not in the main game.
