Hi all,
I'm a bit confused about how to assign the correct texture to Mafia II's models. I've extracted them from the .SDS archives and pulled them into 3DS MAX, but I have no idea how to identify which textures belong to the now textureless model. Anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks _________________

I have a little experience with how to do this. The way I did it was by using an SDS tool to open the .sds file of the model I wanted to extract. I wanted the gas station model from Mafia 2, but didn't know the texture names. So I went to Steam/steamapps/common/Mafia II/pc/sds/shops and opened the gas.sds file. The sds file had every texture that was used for the models of the gas station. For the bigger sds files that have entire sections of the city, you may have to do some research, but it helps narrow down the list of textures by quite a lot!
The tool I used was exSDS, which I got here:
http://cgig.ru/en/2011/01/converting-3d-model-from-mafia-2-en/
You can use any tool that opens and lets you look inside SDS files, and the SDS files will usually tell you what textures the models for that file uses. Now if I could only figure out how to assign the textures to the model in 3DS Max, I would be set!
Hope this helps! I know it's not a concrete answer, but it's how I figured out how to do it, and it worked for me! |

Mafia 2 models use materials defined in edit/materials/default.mtl which then specify what textures to use. I haven't personally toyed around with any of the Mafia 2 model importers/converters yet but I'd assume they either automatically convert the materials or at least dump them in some form so one can look them up in said material library using Greavesy's toolkit for example. |
