Hi all, I've been having some problems recently with other application sound not playing when Pro Tools is open, and having Googled the issue it seems to be something to do with Windows using the software as the default playback device.
One of the results I found told me to solve this by assigning the PC's sound card as the default playback device, but when I went to open the list of playback devices I discovered FIVE of the same listed devices, as well as my back output jack ('speakers') and my front output jack ('headphones').
Any ideas what these are/how I can rid of these permanently? When I uninstall all audio drivers and troubleshoot, Windows seems to think I need all five of the above identical devices reinstalled. Additionally, how can I identify which one is the sound card so I can set it as default? Is it even listed here?
Many thanks. _________________

Yeah I used to have that problem especially
with Nvidia HD Audio drivers which were
no point having as I have 5.1 surround speakers.
You have to prevent Windows from automatically
installing device drivers.
Go to Start then Run and type in "Control", this
will open up control panel - click on "Hardware
and Sound" and then click on "Device Manager"
Find your sound devices and where you see
Nvidia HD Audio or equivalent just uninstall
all four leaving what is your sound card or
if onboard sound whatever that is.
Now go close DM and control panel and go
to Start then Search (not Run) and type in
"Advance System Settings" - it should give
the option to open ASS. Click on the Hardware
tab and then Device Installation Settings.
Now there should be an option for you to
choose to install drivers manually and not
Windows; I have already done this on my
PC - but it should be:-
Code: | Do you want Windows to download driver software and
realistic icons for your devices?
Yes, do this automatically
No, Let me choose what to do (choose this)
Always, install the best driver software from Windows
Update.
Never install driver software from Windows Update (choose this) |
Now if you know which sound chip or onboard sound you have
or can you still hear any sound. Mind you it depends on what happens
when you have saved the changes to device installation settings and
also rebooted your PC.
Hmm what is you Mobo; you could try downloading the
drivers for sound from the manufacturer's site under that model
Also when you download the latest Nvidia drivers you can choose
the Custom installation - just untick those you do not want. Tbh
I just have the graphics drivers and PhysX I don't have 3D or
HD Audio; neither Geforce Experience. _________________
