There are a lot of modders on the site, and I thought maybe we could share some of our tips and techniques with new people who have an interest. Modding is keeping this game amazingly alive (and me too...I had pronounced Matteo dead several times ....but I keep finding new things to do Wink ) So before us old gummers pass on and the art of modding mafia is lost forever...lets share our knowledge.

Okay......and I am being a little bit selfish....I see some of the new stuff being done and I am amazed at what is being done and want to learn how to do it Wink

The Basic Tools And Their Uses - In Matteo's Cheeseburger style modding reposted

The best way to learn modding the game script is to observe and test

Just tinker, test and try

First and foremost is extracting your data with data xtractor you can't change anything if you can't find it

Useful tools available in the download section

bscriptview 4.0

is still my best tool for scripting. Its not the newest, but it is easy to use, easy to read and bullet proof (as long as you give it time to rewrite and reload everything.

Use bscript to open existing game files and see how the game does things

it will be a little daunting at first because the scripts are in a confusing combination of English and Czech

Back up your freeride file and start trying things out.

Change the dollar amounts you pay for things, change the amount of health you get from the "lekarna" and see what happens

Just remember to back up your freeride scene2.bin before every change as a miscript can cause the game to crash

I also use this to add models to a mission (using Mafia World View Editor to find the location)

this tool is handy to bulk remove models or scripts from a mission you are stripping (say you want to use mise07-sara for something new, you have to strip out the old actors and scripts (most) to do this

Also it is my go to tool for changing the cars in the traffic patterns or the civilians

It is rather sketchy so again backup constantly and do not hit the save option twice....rather close and reload the file to keep working (and again back it up)

Mafia World View Editor

This tool made modding so much easier than my old system using capone. With this tool you can move, adjust copy resize objects with your mouse and key strokes in a wyswyg fashion. When using this, back up the HOLE folder as it effects everything. You can also mod collisions (the things that keep you from walking through walls) Its a big tool, and a lot to learn

Or some other .4ds editor or creator. To be honest this is not my strong suit....I am okay at editing existing models but completely lost at creating new ones.... MrRob is the guy to talk to for that. But you would be surprised what you can do by simply modification of shape and texture.

ASCII Editor

occasionally to make certain changes you are going to have go deeper into the coding to accomplish certain things (like activating a proximity load command)

Then there are the dedicated tools

Mafia Weapons Value Editor
Mafia Car Value Editor
Mafia Test Editor
et al

Remember RULE #1

Back up back up back up

somethings that get screwed up can be fixed if you know how

Somethings can't

Just last week I lost about 4 hours of work on My San Francisco portion simply because I did not back up and made a mistake

Noted. Smile I did manage to muck around for a bit with Mafia models using 3DS Max and an export script, but sadly support for the aforementioned suite isn't as big as Zmod, not to mention the latter being unable to correctly do ped models - it's been more than ten years and yet, other than a few which are actually hacked up and worked like peds in GTA3, we still don't have a proper character model mod.
